I'm about 50 hours into TotK and nearly finished with the main quest (I just got the "Destroy Ganondorf" quest), but honestly, I think that BotW is the better game. Unfortunately, it appears that there is no way to get it back, unless there was never a manual save after creating the new game. If your nephew never manually saved, then you can load the manual save slot and it should be your original save, but otherwise it is all gone. This just happened to me as well.
